Earlier this week it was announced that former UFC welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley, would be returning to action and headlining the May 30th event against Gilbert Burns. That event now has an official event location at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The UFC were holding out on approval to return to holding events in Las Vegas and Dana White has confirmed to the Las Vegas Review-Journal that they can return to hosting fights in their home city via a simple text message.
“We are a go on the 30th”
That being said, there is yet to be any official word from the Nevada Athletic Commission who have suspended all combat sports in the state until further notice. However, some other states have already started to allow sporting events behind closed doors including Florida, the host of three UFC events held last week.
Another state that is open for behind closed doors sporting events is Arizona and this is where White had planned to take the May 30th event if it’s not possible to host it at the UFC APEX facility in Las Vegas.
White believes hosting events in the UFC’s home of Las Vegas makes it much safer for everyone involved, fighters included. Another obvious reason to host events at their APEX facility would be the reduced cost of not having to hire out a venue elsewhere. Reducing costs would also help to mitigate the lost gate revenue with the events being held behind closed doors.
