The news gets worse for Barber as she will likely be out of the cage for 9-12 months after suffering an ACL injury and will need to undergo reconstructive surgery on the knee. ESPN caught up with Bucky Barber, the father of the prospect, who stated that the injury occurred within the first 10 seconds of the fight.
“We think she injured it in the first 10 seconds. She stepped on Roxanne’s foot as she backed up and felt a pop. You can see the knee give out on the side. She went back and started fighting and trying to do things and I noticed she was flat in a way I’ve never seen before.”
Her opponent, Modafferi, also noticed the injury and said it was the first time during a fight that she has known an opponent was injured.
“I heard her cry out when she went down when I hit her. Between rounds two and three my coach said it was hurt so keep it standing. This was the first time in my 45 fights that I’ve known an opponent was injured but this game is merciless, you just have to keep going and try to win.”
Although the setback is less than ideal for Barber, she still appears to be keeping a positive mindset and her goal of becoming the youngest champion in UFC history is still the target.
