Gian Villante Steps Up To Heavyweight To Take On Ben Rothwell

Long-time light heavyweight competitor, Gian Villante, makes the jump back up the heavyweight division for the first time since 2011 to take on Ben Rothwell at UFC 249. Newsday first reported the matchup.

Villante’s last bout as a heavyweight came back in his Strikeforce debut where he was defeated via first-round TKO against Chad Griggs. Since then he has competed in the light-heavyweight division and was moved over to the UFC when they acquired Strikeforce. His current record in the UFC light-heavyweight division is 7-8 and notable wins include Ed Herman, Francimar Barroso, Anthony Perosh and Corey Anderson. Villante is currently looking to bounce back from a defeat in his last outing against         Michal Oleksiejczuk.

On the other side of the cage, Rothwell recently snapped a run of three defeats with a TKO win over Stefan Struve. Prior to that he had lost three in a row against Andrei Arlovski, Blagoy Ivanov and Junior Dos Santos. Notable wins for Rothwell include Alistair Overeem, Matt Mitrione and Josh Barnett.

UFC 249 takes place in Brooklyn, New York and is set to be headlined with the lightweight title bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson.
