Francis Ngannou vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruik was one of three main event bouts that was forced to be cancelled due to the coronavirus. However, it looks like we could see the fight rebooked sooner rather than later.
The former heavyweight title challenger caught up with Submission Radio and discussed his thoughts on the coronavirus pandemic as well as when we may see him return to action. Ngannou started out by confirming the UFC has arranged for Ngannou to be tested for COVID-19, the deadly disease caused by the virus.
“I got tested. They got me tested for COVID-19. I guess they tested all the fighters, too, which is kind of like a positive thing. Make you feel a little bit safe to get along with those people.”
Whilst happy that the UFC went through the process of getting him tested, Ngannou did say that he wasn’t too concerned about the coronavirus pandemic and still wishes to compete soon.
“No, I mean I won’t be concerned because once again, I don’t want to say that COVID-19 is nothing, I don’t want to say it’s not bad but technically I think it’s a flu that we have all the time. The only problem with it is it’s very contagious and it can spread very fast. No, I wouldn’t be concerned about it because even after the test, I wasn’t very worried, like whatever it is, it will be OK.
I think the thing right now is the panic. This thing has caused more panic than the real pain itself. We are panicking. Sometimes you think about. I saw people that have cancer, I went to the hospital to see a friend, who was at the hospital for chemo and he was there about to have the chemo and he was scared about the coronavirus.”
Not being overly concerned about the coronavirus, Ngannou wants to return to action fairly swiftly and event discussed the possibility of being added to the UFC 249 event headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson on April 19th.
“There’s a chance that I can be fighting on that card, but you know they have to settle everything down. For now, it seems like they have a location, but they still have to double check and see how they can handle this event safely for people. Because first of all, they’re not just expecting to put people there fighting. They’re also trying to make things to care about our health.”
“The Predator” also confirmed that, as far as he is aware, the opponent will remain the same and he will take on Jairzinho Rozenstruik next.
“I think it’s still the same opponent. I assume he got tested as well. If he’s well, yeah, I think that’s still the plan.”
The clash of the highly ranked heavyweight knockout artists being added to the already stacked pay-per-view would certainly be exciting. White has already confirmed that all fights on the main card and prelims of UFC 249 will be going ahead so the heavyweight clash would be an additional bout should it be added to the show.
