Former welterweight title challenger and #8 ranked welterweight, Stephen Thompson, made an appearance on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday.
Towards the end of the interview, Helwani presented Thompson with a parting gift courtesy of his management team Paradigm Sports Management. Following on from the superfight recent between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz for the Baddest Motherfucker Belt (BMF), Helwani presented Thompson with the Nicest Mofo Belt (NMF).
Along with the large “NMF” letters on the front the belt contains other little details including engraved text saying “God bless” and “please and thank you”.
Thompson is widely regarded as one of the nicest people in the Mixed Martial Arts community. Always well mannered, never talks trash about his opponents and operates through every fight with the upmost respect.
It’s almost a breath of fresh air to see a fighter rewarded for being respectful and kind as this behaviour often flies under the radar in MMA, especially off the back of UFC 245 which saw the culmination of an extremely heated rivalry.
Could we see the UFC’s marketing machine cash in on the newly crowned NMF champion and create an NMF vs BMF superfight? Thompson has faced Masvidal already, claiming a unanimous decision over the Cuban but that was over two years ago, and the momentum of each fighter has changed since then.
