Grasso has now missed the strawweight limit twice in her UFC career and has made the decision to jump up to the 125lb weight class and start a new journey there. Grasso confirmed the news in a lengthy social media post that included her reasons for missing weight as well as a heartfelt apology to Claudia Gadelha.
UFC President, Dana White, also touched on the issue at a pre-fight media scrum and believes the cause of the issue could be extra strength work in training camp leading to an increase in muscle mass.
“There’s nobody nicer than Alexa Grasso, she’s one of the sweetest human beings on the planet. Something must have gone wrong and, I’m no expert in weight cutting or any of that stuff, but if you look at Alexa Grasso, she’s a lot more muscular than she used to be. It looks like she’s been doing a lot of strength and conditioning work and, I don’t this for a fact, I’m just saying, I bet she had a hard time cutting weight because of the extra muscle that she’s put on.
That’s a kid that’s doing all the right things, not doing the wrong things. Something just went wrong and I feel really bad for her.”
White was then asked if the fight between the two would be rescheduled but confirmed that Grasso will be moving up a weight class
“No, She’s going to move up to 125. She let us know she’s going to 125.”
