Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum may just have his return opponent set for a homecoming pay-per-view show in Brazil.
A report from Combate suggests that sources close to the UFC have confirmed that a fight with Aleksei Oleinik and Fabricio Werdum has been finalised for UFC 250 in Brazil. The bout would mark the first return to action for Werdum since March 2018 after failing an out of competition drug test.
Combate went on to state that the contacts for the bout have not been signed yet but the fighters have a verbal agreement in place to face each other at the May event.
Last month, Werdum was granted a 10-month reduction on his suspension making him eligible for competition in April 2020 meaning he will be eligible to compete on the UFC 250 show on 9th May. Werdum took to social media to call out Oleinik shortly after his suspension reduction and Oleinik’s win over Maurice Greene.
Oleinik will be looking to get his second win in a row after a submission win over Maurice Greene snapped a two-fight losing streak. The Russian heavyweight has an extensive amount of mixed martial arts experience with a 58-13 record over 72 professional MMA bouts.
Werdum last suffered a defeat at the hands of a Russian fighter as he was knocked out by Alexander Volkov at UFC London in March 2018. Prior to the setback the former champion was on a two-fight win streak over Marcin Tybura and Walt Harris.
Both fighters are known grappling experts with 48% of Werdum’s wins coming via submission and 79% of Oleinik’s wins coming by submission. However, Werdum has never been submitted in professional mixed martial arts competition.
