Reported by MMAFighting, with the news of the bouts first being reported by MMAJunkie and Sherdog, it has been confirmed that more heavyweight action is set for Bellator 225 in Bridgeport on 24th August.
Minakov vs Ayala
Slotting into the co-main event slot is the former heavyweight champion Vitaly Minakov as he takes on Javy Ayala. Minakov is looking to bounce back from the first defeat in his career as he lost a decision to Cheick Kongo in his return to Bellator. The Russian heavyweight’s first title defence in Bellator was a victory over Kongo before being stripped of the title in 2016 for inactivity as he was competing for Russian promotion Fight Nights Global. Ayala, on the other hand, is coming off a big win over Frank Mir but does have 7 losses on his record although he also has a knockout win over Sergei Kharitonov who faces off against Matt Mitrione in the main event.
Fortune vs Schaffroth
Another heavyweight bout set to take place on the main card of Bellator 225 is Tyrell Fortune vs. Rudy Schaffroth as the two undefeated heavyweights square off. Both fighters have 6 wins and no losses in their professional mixed martial arts career although Schaffroth has a little bit more experience going having had one more fight as a professional that ended in a no contest as well as a 5-2 amateur record before making the move to the professional ranks.
Fortune made his MMA debut for Bellator back in November 2016 where he stopped Cody Miskell in the first round. Since then he has climbed to 6-0 fighting in Bellator with 4 of his victories coming by TKO.
Schaffroth will be making his third Bellator appearance following on from 2 first round knockouts in his first two bouts with the promotion and will be looking to pick up his third straight win over Fortune. The former NCAA Division II champion, Fortune, will be looking to pick up his 7th straight Bellator victory and continue his run, as a highly touted prospect, to the top of the Bellator heavyweight division.
Bellator 225 is shaping up to be a fun night of heavyweight action.
